How to Start a Tech Startup with Zero Investment

You don't need funding to start a tech startup. You need a problem, a laptop, and the discipline to ship.

The Mindset Shift

Stop thinking "I need money to start." Start thinking "I need to build something people want." Revenue comes from value, not investment.

Free Tools to Build With

  • Code: VS Code, Git, GitHub (all free)
  • Frontend: Next.js, React, Tailwind CSS (all free)
  • Backend: Supabase free tier, Vercel free tier, Railway free tier
  • Design: Figma (free for personal use), Canva
  • Email: Resend (free tier), Mailchimp (free tier)
  • Analytics: Vercel Analytics, Google Analytics, Plausible

  • The Playbook

    Step 1: Find a Problem

Talk to 20 people in your target market. What frustrates them? What do they wish existed? Write down patterns.

Step 2: Build an MVP in 2 Weeks

Not a perfect product. A minimum viable product that solves one problem for one type of user. Ship ugly, ship fast.

    Step 3: Get 10 Users

Not 10,000. Just 10 who will actually use it and give feedback. Personal outreach, not marketing.

Step 4: Iterate Based on Feedback

Fix what's broken. Add what's missing. Remove what's unnecessary. Repeat.

    Step 5: Monetize

Once people love it, charge for it. Stripe makes payment integration trivial. Start with simple pricing.

    Revenue Before Fundraising

The best startups don't need investors — they need customers. Build something valuable, charge for it, and reinvest the revenue. If you do want to raise later, having revenue makes you infinitely more attractive to investors.

    The Truth

The barrier to starting a tech startup has never been lower. The only thing stopping you is the decision to start.
